| Description | Magna Mater (known as the Great Mother or associated with the goddess Cybele), often worshipped as a fertility goddess, was officially adopted in Rome in 204 BC. Attis is introduced as her divine partner, and with her, his worship spread throughout the Roman Empire. However, in the finds, the two deities are named by different names and attributes. In my research, I will explore the context of this variation and trace how the cult of Attis spread and what material culture. I am interested in why some finds made it to the borders of the Roman Empire and why some epithets of Attide have been found in places other than where they originated. For the analysis, I will use data from archaeological databases, describing mostly epigraphs, reliefs and statuettes. Furthermore, I will discuss possible solutions and complications that may arise in this research. |
