Among the avid readers of The Letters and other books by Roman Guardini was the German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, designer of the Tugendhat Villa in Brno. From a young age, Mies was very interested in the natural sciences and humanities. He understood his work as an expression of the main tendencies of the time. Building art "is always the will of the times captured in space, nothing else", he wrote in 1924. It was Letters from Lake Como that helped him clarify the question of the will of the times and its tendencies. |
