Description Universal design and the education-focused methodologies derived from it are a tool to ensure that the course is accessible to the largest possible group of students. They are suitable for those teachers or curriculum developers who are aware of the diversity of needs of their current and future students and want to prepare for this in all aspects of their course. In this article, universal design methodologies with an educational focus are introduced and the benefits and limitations of their use are described. The basic principles of universal design are then demonstrated through three case studies related to the teaching of mathematics in higher education.
