Description In searching for new options for producing effective probiotics to reduce post-weaning diarrhea in piglets, the digestive tract of healthy pigs represents an ideal resource. In this study, a comprehensive set of lactic acid bacterial strains was isolated, identified and characterized in detail from the intestinal contents of wild pigs. Six candidates with the most suitable probiotic properties were used to construct a probiotic mixture for weanling piglets and tested under experimental conditions after infection with an enterotoxigenic strain of Escherichia coli. Combined with a suitably supplemented starter feed, the synbiotic feed mixture thus reduced the numbers of E. coli excreted by piglets after infection and the pathogen clearance time without adversely affecting the health status of the animals or performance parameters.
