Description | This paper delves into the contrast between direct discourse marking in the Vulgate and Jerome’s original works. It is built upon the initial comparison of a restricted sample of Jerome’s texts conducted by Mikulová (2022, 62, fig. 5). The primary emphasis is on verbs that convey the meaning of ‘to say’ since they are interchangeable and can reflect distinct approaches. For this purpose, two biblical books and a selection of Jerome’s texts are compared. The analysis reveals variations in preferences for individual markers. |
