Description | The contribution discusses the historical information about the ethnonym Avar and the most important attempts to etymologize it, more or less accepting the solution proposed by Eugene Helimski about its Tungusic origin. The main effort is concentrated on explanation of the Old Russian variant of the ethnonym, Ob?ri, and such purported characteristics of its bearers as ‘giants’, which were ‘proud of spirit’. The conclusion that this is explainable through the Mongolic mediation is in agreement with the opinion of Karl Heinrich Menges about the Mongolic language component in the Avar tribal union. |
