Description | This article focuses on psychopathy and its diagnosis using the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised and its derivatives, most notably the Psychopathy Checklist: Screening Version. It also examines the connection between psychopathy and criminal recidivism, or a comparison of the chances of getting parole between psychopathic convicts and convicts with lower levels of psychopathic traits. The findings presented in the article are based on a number of empirical studies, on which the subsequent considerations of the author are based. It also briefly describes the nature of parole decision-making in Canada compared to the Czech Republic. This comparison is mainly focused on the question of whether the Czech courts are sufficiently qualified to decide on conditional release, which is in a sense a secondary agenda for them. The Canadian system is quite different in this respect. Within its framework, decisions on conditional release are made by professionally trained commissions whose members are dedicated to the field of conditional release. This comparison is important, because even in Canada, it was found that psychopathic convicts, who generally have a significantly higher risk of recidivism, especially violent recidivism, have a multiple times greater chance of obtaining a conditional release from serving a prison sentence. |
