Description | In her texts, Hana Librová writes that a dishwasher makes up a peculiar object of family discussions in the so-called “Colourful” households, which represent a nonideologically orientated environmentally friendly lifestyle. Through a secondary analysis of interviews from Librová’s research, complemented with data from additional research waves, we show how the technology of the dishwasher can symbolize the complexity of “voluntary simplicity”, supporting the argument Librová made in her work. In the chapter, we present a variety of households’ perspectives on the (non)ownership and (non)use of the dishwasher. Through an analysis of the deliberation of dishwasher acquisition, we look at the broader issues of linking consumerist restraint to imagination, family relationships, and values – especially the value of (slow and quality) time. |
