Description | When studying the process of grammaticalization, there is a question whether clitics represent the intermediate step between full nongrammaticalized words and the grammaticalized ones. Since Czech clitics display properties of both - full words and affixes - it leads us to ask if they also display different degrees of grammaticalization. In Czech, clitics appear in the second position after the first syntactic constituent and since they are classified as enclitics, they are expected to integrate phonologically with their syntactic host. We test this phonological integration of pronominal clitics experimentally, aiming to explore the extent to which enclisis is influenced by the syntactic nature of the clitic’s host. We then hypothesize that different degrees of phonological integration correspond to the different degrees of grammaticalization. |
