Description | Presentation explores the de-medicalisation of pregnancy and childbirth through the experience of women giving birth in and out of hospital. It addresses the question of women's active participation in shaping the form of care provided, its limitations within two models and addresses the justification for viewing these models dichotomously. It examines the transformation of cultural hierarchies and structural settings that de-termine the form of care, linking theoretical concepts of gender and power to con-cepts of autonomy, dignity, competence and trust through qualitative interview anal-ysis. |
