Description | The chapter proposes the “scene” to grasp feminist activities and actors and bridge their heterogeneity. The authors revisit the original concept of the (Czech) feminist scene (Nyklová, 2014) at the time of increased transnational backlash against feminism (Graff, 2014; Graff & Korolczuk, 2021a; Kováts, 2017; Kuhar & Paternotte, 2017; Verloo & Paternotte, 2018). The chapter presents trends in feminist theoretical scholarship as well as bottom-up activism on particular “cases”. These are the academic gender studies program in Brno, the establishment and consolidation of the Gender Expert Chamber of the Czech Republic, and the efforts of the Centre for Gender and Science. These cases often represent intensely lived experiences of engaged actors. Such involvements are frequently endured in isolation and interpreted as disempowering episodes. Their forming endeavour is constant search for sources of enthusiasm in work that is both professional and personal. The chapter suggests that alternative, more optimistic, interpretations of the processes may be employed, thus providing limited hope to sustain the gender agenda on in the region and survive. We build on previous scholarship and ponder how we can productively conceptualise the links and alliances that seem to appear across the scene. |
