Description | The topic of the paper is the event of the creation of a work of art in time and the influence of such a fact on its value, basic understanding and final interpretation. The method of answering the problem is metonymy: if the arguments presented are valid about two paintings, they will be valid about a whole class of similar works. Using the specific examples of Velázquez's Las Meninas and Picasso's Guernica, it will be shown what it means to understand these paintings in terms of an event at the time of their creation, as well as the relationship between understanding, reference, comprehension and interpretation, and the relationship between temporality and permanence. The referential properties of the work seem to be crucial in the matter at hand, which ultimately lead to the so-called weak anthropocentric principle, which has a decisive influence on all the factors mentioned. |
