Description When Michel Foucault conceptualized the body as a locus of power, he provided a framework for sociologists to analyze how dominant discourses and gender norms regulate the body. This presentation examines the intricate relationship between power and the body in the construction of masculinities among aging men, specifically focusing on managers and athletes in the Czech Republic. By analyzing how power—expressed through self-control, environmental control, and authority over others—shapes and influences these men's bodies, we shed light on the embodiment of power as revealed through the life narratives of men confronting its gradual decline. Our analysis is based on 30 qualitative interviews with (cis)heterosexual men aged 50 and older, conducted within the broader scope of the sociological research project, Institutions of Aging Men (IAM GACR 2023-2025). Our approach is grounded in critical masculinity studies, which underscore the inherent contradictions in the construction of masculinities and the negative repercussions these contradictions can engender.
