Description The study was focused on patients diagnosed with candidemia or yeast colonization of catheters in 2022 examined at the Microbiology department of St. Anne's Hospital in Brno. Captured yeast species and their susceptibility to antifungal agents were evaluated. We also monitored the age, sex and diagnosis of the patients, the length of hospitalization and the type of ward in which the patients were admitted. Haemocultures were cultured in a DB Bactec FX 200 haemostat (Becton Dickinson, FR). Positive catches were Gram stained and further cultured on standard culture media. Catheters were examined semi-quantitatively by sonication (Sonorex Digital 10P, Bandelin, DE) followed by culture on standard media and Sabouraud agar (Milipore, DE). Yeasts were tentatively identified using CHROMagar selective chromogenic medium (Trios, FR) and then identified with MALDI TOF MS (Bruker Daltonics, USA). Antifungal susceptibility was determined primarily by diffusion disc test (Liofilchem, IT) and E-tests (Biomérieux, FR), and in clinically severe cases by Sensitititre YestOne (TermoFisher Scientific, USA). Of the 1327 positive haemocultures, 46 with yeast from 19 patients were captured. C. albicans (CAAL, 11 patients) was the most frequently identified, growing in an average of 2 vials. We also captured C. glabrata (CAGL, 5 patients), which grew in an average of 4 vials, C. tropicalis (CATR, 3 patients) with an average of 3 captures, and C. parapsilosis (CAPA, 1 patient) with 3 captures. In 2 patients, yeasts grew only in anaerobic vials, namely 1 CAAL and 1 CAGL. The prevalence of catches was higher in patients admitted to the ICU and ARO wards and hospitalized for more than 21 days. The median age of patients was higher than 70 years and was not influenced by gender. Yeast sepsis was most common in surgical patients with gastrointestinal involvement (5 patients), which is consistent with data from the ECMM Candida III multinational European observational cohort study. Of the 1911 positive catheter culture findings, 33 were from 30 patients with yeast growth, and 5 patients also had a positive haemoculture. CAAL was the most frequently identified (18 patients), followed by CAGL (5 patients), CAPA (4 patients), CATR (2 patients) and C. krusei (1 patient). The most common diagnosis of patients with yeast colonization of catheters was cardiovascular disease.
