| Description | The rapid onset of the global human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pandemic in the late 1980s and early 1990s made the disease one of the most studied infectious diseases in medicine. Continuous replication of HIV in the human body leads directly and indirectly to a progressive loss of CD4+ T-lymphocytes and progressive immune dysfunction with a fatal end. |
