Description | Sulfur-oxidizing Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans reduces ferric iron aerobically through a dual mechanism. Proteomic analysis revealed sulfur metabolism and redox-active proteins facilitating nonenzymatic and enzymatic reduction. Enzymes promote sulfur intermediate formation for nonenzymatic reduction, enhanced by enzymatic redox activity. These findings provide insights into ferric iron reduction mechanisms with bioleaching implications. |
