Description | The social model of disability is the dominant framework for understanding disability in the social sciences and humanities. Although this model has been criticized in the past for underestimating biological factors and overemphasizing social causes of disability, it remains widely supported and defended. However, some academics and activists advocate for an even more radical argument. Not only is disability a result of social relationships, but the concept of impairment also lacks an objective, natural basis and is a product of arbitrary historical and social forces and prejudices. The aim of the lecture is to summarize the reasons for rejecting radical forms of the social model of disability and subsequently to provide a critique of the social model of impairment. |
