Description | The article analyses a 1928 drama Plukovník Švec by the "Legion's writer" Rudolf Medek. The play depicts the life of Josef Jiří Švec, an officer whose suicide went on to become one of crucial moments of the anabasis of the Czechoslovak Legion in Russia. At its time, the drama was a roaring success with the public - however, it also received harsh criticism by historians and members of the Legion, citing its stereotypical and purposeful depictions of both the events and realia. The paper aims to identify, describe and analyse these aspects of Medek's play, to put them into wider context, to confront them with the reality they depict and to offer an interpretation of the author's motivations and intent. |
