Citation
Description The study addresses and analyses three intertwined issues related to a unique illumination of the Heavenly Jerusalem in the so-called Jena codex. This richly illuminated manuscript of Bohemian provenance contains a series of Latin and Czech pictorial and textual antitheses connected with the Czech Reformation of the early 15th century, including a singular representation of the earthly and the heavenly cities. The image of the contrasting cities was a popular and recurrent theme in medieval literature, nevertheless, such antithesis connecting pictorial and textual material in an intricate manner is unparalleled not only in medieval Bohemian culture. The study therefore provides an iconographic description and analysis of the illumination as well as the accompanying textual material which is followed by an interpretation of the images in relation to other literary representations of similar material within the context of the Reformation literature.
