Description In this study we turn our attention to political rhetoric in periods of crisis in order to characterize the speech of public figures from Bulgarian and Czech political life. The paper examines political speech in Bulgaria and the Czech Republic in a limited period of time within the framework of similar events – a vote of no confidence in the governments. In both analysed situations similar speech patterns are observed for the implementation of the communicative strategy: accusing the opponent of incompetence and committing fraud, use and overuse of lexemes with negative connotation, suggesting a sense of catastophe and misfortune. Political rhetoric includes the use of colloquial devices, which helps to build a pejorative image of the political opponent. Message intensification is also achieved through the use of a number of lexemes with negative connotation, which is characteristic of aggression in political speech.
