Description The paper discusses classifier constructions in Slavic in comparison with other languages. The term classifier refers to a word or morpheme that indicates the semantic class of a noun. In some languages, classifiers obligatorily combine with nouns to allow for their modification by quantifiers, e.g., Chinese: san *(ben) shu [three *(CLF) book] ‘three books’, whereas in other they are optional, e.g., Hungarian három (darab) könyv [three (CLF) book] ‘three books’. I will examine the functions of Polish sztuka, para, Czech kus, Bulgarian dúši and Russian golova, čelovek.
