Description | Four sets of Renaissance music prints, preserved today in the collections of the Olomouc Research Library, come from the original library of the Jesuit College in Opava. None of the aforementioned sets is complete, mostly only one- or two-part books of one collection. The Opava Jesuit provenance is not primary in any of the set, which is understandable in view of the date of the publications (second half of the 16th century) and the genesis of the Opava Jesuit College in the 17th century. It seems that this aspect of secondary provenance is not unusual in the case of monastic libraries either, on the contrary. Moreover, the relationship of music books to historical library collections used to be often complicated by the fact that both chant and polyphonic repertoire were not acquired for the library but primarily for the liturgy and other musical performances of the institution, and these music books often came to the library only as antiquities, if at all. |
