Description A child with a hearing impairment growing up in a hearing society faces a range of challenges and demands. Hearing impairment cannot be understood as the loss of only one of the senses. Its presence also affects other areas such as communication, socialisation and cognitive function. Ignorance of the hidden consequences of hearing impairment among those in the helping professions can have a fatal impact on the quality of life of an individual with a hearing impairment. The aim of this review study is to analyze professional sources that address the topic of hearing impairment and its impact on the child. The study is based on five expert sources that address the effects of hearing impairment from different perspectives, such as the sub-development of language functions, and compare the results of test batteries of children with hearing impairment with hearing peers. The results of the research relate to children with a prelingual hearing loss that is compensated for and the child grows up in a predominantly spoken environment. For children with a hearing impairment, large differences in research findings are evident. In some areas, they may perform comparably to their hearing peers, but overall, in the final comparison, children with hearing impairment tend to lag behind, even when the predictors leading children with these sensory impairments to near-normal development are in place, such as early compensation, intervention, and a stimulating family and communication environment.
