Description This paper presents findings about the education of gifted pupils in mathematics in two different learning environments (a regular heterogeneous lower secondary school classroom and an extended lower secondary school mathematics classroom). The aim of the research investigation was to describe what support measures are provided to gifted pupils in mathematics at lower secondary school and how gifted pupils themselves perceive mathematics education in terms of their development and individual needs. The data from the qualitative research investigation were obtained through participant observation of mathematics teaching, semi-structured interviews with gifted pupils and content analysis of the Recommendations for gifted pupils from the Educational Psychological Counselling Centres. Data were analyzed through standard coding procedures. The results showed that gifted pupils in the extended mathematics classroom were more likely to have differentiated tasks available to them, whereas in the mainstream classroom there was limited support for their needs, which may be insufficient in terms of their development. Gifted pupils favour logical tasks and prefer group work. When working independently, they welcome subsequent discussion of different solutions with their classmates. Gifted pupils would welcome more challenging mathematics lessons, but they also perceive that their classmates find the subject quite difficult.
