Description We identified a gene, dafA, which encodes a protein with dehalogenase activity and low luciferase activity in the brittle star (Amphiura filiformis) genome. The gene dafA corresponds to two previously identified gene models (AF37308.1 and AFI06958.1). DafA exhibits luciferase activity that was significantly higher than the negative control, but produced light four and five orders of magnitude lower than that of AfLuc and Renilla luciferase (RLuc), respectively. Simultaneously, DafA exhibits dehalogenase activity which is comparable to those of characterized haloalkane dehalogenases in bacteria.
