Description | Understanding the genetic factors influencing symbiotic nitrogen fixation in red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is crucial not only for a deeper comprehension of this process but also for breeding new cultivars with improved nitrogen fixation. Enhancing the use of symbiotic crops and improving nitrogen fixation efficiency could significantly reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers and support more sustainable agricultural practices. While the general mechanisms of nitrogen fixation are well-studied in model species, our study on the genetic variability and allelic variants of nitrogen fixation genes in red clover offers unique insights that can be applied in the breeding of better nitrogen-fixing cultivars. The research focused on analyzing the genetic diversity of nitrogen fixation genes across the species. Using whole-genome resequencing, we assessed the genetic diversity of 173 nitrogen fixation-related genes. The identified orthologous nitrogen fixation genes represent important genomic targets for breeding aimed at improving nitrogen fixation. Our findings reveal a complex genetic architecture underlying this trait in red clover, as well as the variable genetic diversity of these genes. Conserved nitrogen fixation genes were identified as key for the fixation process itself, while five additional gene clusters share a common evolutionary history, suggesting their functional interconnectedness. |
