Description The new legislation effective from 1 July 2023 makes it mandatory for inpatient healthcare providers to supplement their operating rules with an assessment and management of the risks of indoor plumbing. Healthcare facilities must now assess risks associated with lead in drinking water, Legionella spp. in hot water, and other generic water system risks. Stricter hygiene limits and methodology for conducting risk assessments are set out in Decree No 252/2004 Coll., which came into force on 4 January 2024. This legislative change introduces the obligation to actively seek and manage risks, which has not been legally required in the Czech Republic so far. Healthcare providers, as 'hot water producers', are now responsible for compliance with hygiene requirements, including regular preventive inspections and analysis of the technical parameters of water distribution systems. The implementation of these measures requires a team approach and a uniform methodology. To facilitate the application of the new requirements, the Society of Hospital Epidemiology and Hygiene is preparing expert advice.
