Description | Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) develops in up to 15% of patients requiring ICU admission and is a leading cause of mortality. The physiologic definition of MODS is severe acquired dysfunction in at least two organ systems of at least 24 to 48 hours duration. Sepsis is the most common cause of MODS. Splanchnic ischemia appears to represent a common denominator in the pathogenesis and/or nonresolution of MODS. General therapy of MODS requires maintenance of global and local oxygen delivery, meticulous organ-specific support, eradication of primary and secondary septic foci and other sources of systemic inflammatory respon-se syndrome (SIRS), antimicrobial therapy, and nutritional support. Antibiotics play an important role in the treatment of critically ill patients, although their usefulness in some situations is debatable. |
