| Description | The article summarizes basic data on valproate. Attention is devoded in particular to clinical studies in affective disorders, incl. Czech investigations. Valproate has a broader spectrum of action than lithium. It is successful also in mixed episodes of bipolar disorders and rapid cycling. The availability of the retarded form is an advantage, it is well tolerated by the gastrointestinal tract. |
