Description | Dead wood and old moribund trees are characteristic structural elements of forest ecosystems. Here, they represent the dominant resource of dead organic matter as well as specific types of micro-habitats. Many "saproxylic" microorganisms, fungi and animals (mostly invertebrates) are adapted to utilise this re-source. In Europe, rather high attention has been paid to saproxylic animals during the last approximately 15 years, particularly to insects serving as indicators of well-preserved old growths. The old "hardwood" floodplain forest stands in South Moravia present an opportunity to complement existing knowledge by information from lowland forests, included such exposed to inundation. Based on research the field part of which was conducted from 1996 to 1999, the saproxylic communities of selected arthropod taxa (Coleoptera, Diptera: Brachycera, Hymenoptera: Formicidae, Araneida) are reviewed |
