Description | This paper inquires biographical and historical dynamics of the proceses of assmilation as it is found in biographical narratives of some Hungarian and Roma migrants living in the Czech republic. Migration in its metaphorical sense of a passage across social and cultural borderlines is brought into play as a central category for understanding the phenomena of assimilation. A critical discussion of Milton Gordon's distinction between cultural and structural assimilation provides a tool to conceptualise the dynamics of assimilatory border crossing in terms of the interdependence of migrants' social inclusion and the cultural reproduction of their lifeworld. Outcomes of the interpretative biographical analysis are demonstrated by case studies focusing on strategic situations of identity construction. |
