Description The minimum amount of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans biomass was demonstrated to maintain oxidation conditions in the solution for the complete pyrite oxidation. Metabolic activity of bacteria was related only to the oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III). The pure indirect mechanism of pyrite biooxidation was observed. Inhibition of iron-oxidizing activity leads to sulfur formation. To study conditions for elemental sulfur biooxidation, different sulfur substrates were tested. Michaelis-Menten kinetics was demonstrated. Michaelis constants varied in dependence on a physiological state of bacteria.
