Description Six taxa were recognized in the Czech Republic: Eleocharis mamillata subsp. mamillata, E. mamillata subsp. austriaca, E. palustris subsp. palustris, E. palustris subsp. vulgaris, Eleocharis uniglumis subsp. uniglumis and E. uniglumis subsp. sterneri. The occurrence of Eleocharis mamillata subsp. mamillata in the Czech Republic is restricted to areas with cold, moist climates with an annual precipitation of more than 650 mm. The distribution of Eleocharis mamillata subsp. austriaca is divided into two parts in the Czech Republic. The first is localized in the Carpathian and Sudeten mountains, continuous with the distribution in the Slovak Carpathians, and the smaller second one is in the Šumava mountains, probably connected to the distribution in the Austrian Alps. Eleocharis palustris subsp. palustris usually occurs in the warmer parts of the Czech Republic with an annual average temperature of more than 7 degrees Celsius and less than 650 mm annual precipitation. Eleocharis palustris subsp. vulgaris occurs much more frequently in the western part of the Czech Republic. This taxon occurs more frequently in areas with a higher concentration of ponds. The distribution of Eleocharis uniglumis subsp. uniglumis is limited by soil conditions. This taxon occurs in calcareous fen or saline habitats. These localities are situated in the lower and warmer parts of the Czech Republic. Eleocharis uniglumis subsp. sterneri had only two localities in the Czech Republic, near Strachotín in Southern Moravia. Both of them were flooded by the lowest Novomlýnská Nádrž Reservoir. The determination key is based on the following characters: stomatal length; achene length; pollen length and fertile glume length (features correlated with chromosome number); culm transparence (on fresh plants); vascular bundle density; basal sterile glume amplexicaulity; width of basal glume margin; number of perigonal bristles; length/width ratio of the stylopodium; stylopodium appearance; stylopodium insertion on the achene and receptacle density in the spike axis.
