Description | The paper analyses the historical changes in the woman's role and the related changes in the views of motherhood. Today, many women experience difficulties with post-partum adaptation, in spite of going through a good theoretical training (prenatal courses, literature, etc.). The set of non-specific symptoms is usually called post-partum depression and it usually comes during the period of puerperium but it may last longer. We try to summarise the current knowledge on post-partum depression, its probable causes and possible therapy or prevention - mostly from the psychological viewpoint. This is illustrated by a comparison of a typical early motherhood in civilised western society and in some still traditionally living tribes (e.g. in India). |
