Description Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) belongs to the new brain stimulating technique. In pahramcoresistant epilepsy its efficacy was proved, now it is examined in pharmacoresistant depression.Based on the results of an open acute and long-term study with 60 patients, VNS was aproved in the EU and Canada in pharmacoresistant depression. In a 10-week acute study 31% patientes improved substantially, one year after implantation 46% improved. The improvement was maintained or the psychic state improved in 91% of responders after acute treatment adn 18% non-responders to acute treatment became responders.
