Description | This article deals with work safety at chemica llaboratory connected with so called pipetting. This is a well-known laboratory method for measuring the volume of liquids used even by school children. The normal glass pipettes used at Czech schools are quite dangerous, as they do not prevent workers from intoxication, corrosion and (which is rarely mentioned) infection. Several possibilities of prevention are discussed in this article. The safest and the most precise equipment for pipetting are so called automatic pipettes (micropipettes), commonly used at research workplaces and in rich countries also at schools. That is why Czech students should be acquainted with them. But, as these pipettes are very expensive, they can not be used at Czech schools yet and even not all teachers of chemistry do know them. |
