Description | The article "Preconditions of liberal understanding" explores the so-called propaganda model elaborated by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky in the book Manufacturing Consent. It summarizes the academic exploration of this radical functionalist model of the behaviour of US media and deals in more detail in particular with the terms of propaganda, elites and hegemony. The individual so-called filters that regulate media communication according to Herman and Chomsky are placed within the context of studies dealing with ownership, advertising, media sources, institutional pressure (flak) and dominant ideology. In his conclusion the author summarizes problematic areas of the propaganda model and proposes a series of questions for the more thorough critical analysis of media behaviour within the political-economic environment of late modern societies. |
