Description Strain CCM 3356, originated from soil and studied for its ability to degrade the herbicide asulam (methyl (4-aminobenzenesulphonyl)-carbamate) and sulphanilamide, was originally identified as Flavobacterium sp. (Walker, 1978). Because strain CCM3356 was found to be Gram positive, it was necessary to reclassify this culture. Phylogenetic analysis based on almost complete 16S rDNA sequence and a wide spectrum of chemotaxonomic features, as determination of menaquinones, diaminopimelic acids and mycolic acids, peptidoglycan type and whole cell fatty acids profile, were used for the detailed characterization of strain CCM 3356.
