| Description | Meteorological records of Michel Stüeler, tanner master at Krupka (north-west Bohemia) are analysed from the torso of his memorial book of 1629-1649. The course of the weather at Krupka and surroundings is described, verified and completed by further sources from the Czech Lands. Attention is paid above all to extreme signs of the weather (such as frosts, thunderstorms, hailstorms, and gales). Whereas in the 1630s there prevail information about drier periods, in the 1640s there are more frequent reports on colder weather and a more conspicuous concentration of meteorological extremes (e.g. noxious late and early frosts occurring also in the summer months). Stüelers reports are an important source of the weather in the Czech Lands for the 1630s-1640s, which otherwise belong to periods poor in information. |
