Description The aim of the study was to investigate the development of noninvasively determined BRS in children and young adults. 467 healthy subjects (11 - 21 years) were examined and divided into 11 age-subgroups according to the age. Beat-to-beat values of inter beat intervals (IBI), systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure were measured, and their power spectra were calculated. BRS was age-independent in this group. There were estimated limits of BRS for the whole group: 5th percentile - 3.9 ms/mmHg; 50th - 9.0; 95th - 19.4. Significant relationship was found between BRS and mean IBI (r = 0.44) with increase of IBI 20 ms/year (11-17 years), and 8 ms/year (18-21 y). BRSf decreased significantly with age (r = -0.35), the average decrease was 0.9 mHz/mmHg per year. The age-dependent decline of BRSf (mHz/mmHg) is present, but BRS (ms/mmHg) did not change with age in children and young adults.
