| Description | The Czech family underwent two transformations in the last decade: 1) society had to adjust to changes in the political and economic systems, and 2) the western European value system and lifestyle began to influence everyday life in ways that de-emphasized natality. The opportunity costs of maternity increased and fertility, especially among young women, has dramatically decreased. The marriage rate has decreased across all age groups, and the number of children born out of wedlock, especially among the lower social classes, has grown. However, with regards to attitudes, the ideal of the nuclear family as a personal life goal enjoys nearly universal support. The next decade will be important in determining whether the value of children will decrease among the Czech people. The results of our research indicate that the Czech Republic will experience only a limited decrease in the value of children. |
