Description | Maxillofacial surgery is a rather young special medical branch dealing with the treatment of oral cavity, jaws and face disorders including facial bone fractures. Since the ancient time, the men's endeavour after understanding the mechanism has been known of both the occurrence of these fractures and proper treatment of them. The serious impact on the patient is well known, as well, i.e. both from the funcional point of view (the face is the seat of important senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and also speech, and it is also the entrance to the airways and digestive system), and from the psychological point of view (the face loses its esthetic role of character expression, intelligence and beauty). This paper is a concise study excerpted from a number of literary sources about the efforts of well-known personalities from general medicine and espeially from surgical fields. The study describes how they introduced the new treatment methods, reposition and fragment fixation into the clinical practice, and also the development of the above methods. |
