Description | In recent years, detailed examinations of more than 1200 skeletons from four locations in Moravia dating from the 5th to the 18th centuries were undertaken. The most frequently found pathological changes on the skeletons examined were traces of joint diseases. The principal purpose of the present study was to develop an original optimized procedure for paleopathological diagnoses of individual cases and identification of optimum classification patterns of the conditions. The results have shown that the starting point for the assessment of joint changes are detailed macroscopic and radiologic examinations that serve to define the initial working diagnosis, on the basis of which a decision can be taken about the use of some other financially or technologically more demanding methods. It has been found useful to classify findings with joint involvement into degenerative productive process manifestations, rheumatoid diseases, infectious arthritides and other joint-damaging diseases. |
