Description | Brno reservoir has long-term problems with toxic water blooms. For successful restoration of this locality, there might be also a need to remove sediments. That is why complex assessment of sediment contamination and toxicity was performed during 2004. As a part of this complex study including chemical analysis of contaminants, ecotoxicity testing and other parameters we tested the applicability of Tubifex tubifex as a test organism for direct evaluation of sediment toxicity. Tubifex tubifex was exposed to sediments for 14 days. Two sediment bioassay methods were compared. The first was a survival test and the second was assessment of parameters serving as biomarkers of sublethal effects (such as GPx, GR, GSH, GST). Results of our study document suitability of Tubifex tubifex for toxicity testing of raw waters and sediments. The biochemical markers were shown to be more responsive than classical mortality parameter especially at sites with lower level of contamination. |
