Description Sequences from the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene were determine for 16 species of the family Ceratopogonidae representing 5 genera of 3 subfamilies along with species of other nematoceran families. The purpose of this study was to develop a molecular phylogeny of the Ceratopogonidae and to test the use of the 16S rRNA gene on several taxonomic levels, as within the family as well as interspecific relationships. Phylogenetic reconstruction by neighbour-joining and maximum parsimony methods gave strong support to the monyphyly and the recent systematics of the family. The results supported also the validity of species D. saxicola, D. versicolor and D. septousa, which are very instabile and variable in morphological characters.
