Description | Beta-haemolytic streptococci are most common aetiology agent of secondary infection of wounds, ulcerations and decubitus ulcers. Their laboratory diagnosis is complicated because other less fastidious bacteria often takes part in the infection (Staphylococcus aureus, pseudomonas and enterobacteria). On blood agar, these bacteria overgrowth the colonies of beta-haemolytic streptococci. The isolation of beta-haemolytic streptococci on blood agar and on selective blood agar with addition of amikacin (36 g/ ml) was compared. 836 specimens from 782 patients were examined. Eighty-six isolates of beta-haemolytic streptococci were detected. In 73 cases there were identified other bacterial species which took part in infection, most frequently: Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. At the specimens with mixed infection 46 isolates of beta-hemolytic streptococci were detected on blood agar and on blood agar with amikacin. Next 27 isolates were found only on blood agar with amikacin. Without using of selective medium 37 % of isolates of beta-haemolytic streptococci at the specimen of skin lesion would escape. |
