Description Reliable and sensitive methods for detection of ability to form biofilm in clinically important microorganisms, which are applicable in routine laboratory, are necessary. Currently, wide spectrum of investigative techniques is used, from biofilm visualization by means of microscopic techniques, through biofilm cultivation and detection of biofilm components or physical-chemical/physicochemical differences of biofilm positive strains in comparison with their planktonic forms up to detection of genes responsible for biofilm formation. With respect to limitations of particular methods, the best results are available by their combination.
