• Description: The publication defines basic terms related to floods, gives overview of corresponding flood papers to date and presents meteorological conditions of flood origin. Floods in the period of systematic hydrological measurements are evaluated for Prague (the Vltava), Děčín (the Elbe), louny (the Ohře), Bohumín (the Odra) and Kroměříž (the Morava). Documentary sources with information about floods are characterised and chronologies of historical floods for 5 mentioned watercourses are listed. Synthetic information of floods based on documentary data and systematic hydrological measurements during the past millennium is given
