Description A collisional-radiative model was applied to the study of the reduced electric field strength (E/N) in the column of the diffuse dielectric barrier discharge in neon. The calculated emission spectra were fitted by the least-squares method to the measured spectra with respect to the unknown parameter E/N. In the model the populations of thirty excited levels of neon atom were calculated. Various elementary collision processes were taken into account: electron impact excitation, deexcitation and ionization of neon atoms, emission and absorption of radiation, metastable-metastable collisions, metastable and radiative dimer production, Penning ionization, recombination etc. The Boltzmann kinetic equation for electron distribution function was solved for given E/N to determine the rates of electron collisions. Although differences between measured and calculated spectra were observed, the method allowed to estimate the reduced electric field strength to be 1 – 3 Td.
