Description | We prepared nanoscopic particles of amorphous iron oxide by sonolysis [1] of tris(2,4-pentanedionato)iron, Fe(acac)3, under Ar atmosphere in tetraglyme with a variable amount of added water. SEM showed nanoscopic particles of a uniform size distribution and nearly spherical shapes with a diameter of about 20 nm. The organic components of the powder were identified by IR spectroscopy as acetate groups. TEM and the in-field Mössbauer spectra revealed evidence for the amorphous nature of the iron oxide product. Nanoparticles were superparamagnetic and the Mössbauer blocking temperature was extremely low with a sharp transition around 20 K. Thermal behavior of the powders was studied by TG, magnetic TG, DTA, and DSC analysis, Mössbauer spectroscopy and HT XRD. |
